STARR service sight

Marian University students spent Friday afternoon volunteering at Aspire House, where they watered plants and cleared dead sunflowers in the community garden as part of the Students Taking Active Reflective Roles (STARR) program.
Aspire House, operated by the Aspire Higher Foundation and founded by Tim and Sharon Clark, works to create community spaces and programs in Indianapolis’ Near Northwest neighborhood. The garden cleanup was organized after a week of unusually hot weather damaged the plants.
STARR connects Marian students with service opportunities across Indianapolis, including food pantries, shelters, after-school programs and community housing projects. More than 100 students participated last year, according to the university.
Among this year’s newcomers is freshman San Damiano Scholar Adam McIntyre, who said his scholarship led him to the program.
“San Dam is what gave me the connection to go to STARR, and STARR is what gives me a connection to help out in this community,” McIntyre said.
The San Damiano Scholarship, which can cover up to full tuition, requires students to complete community service hours. Through STARR, McIntyre has also helped build tables for Campus Ministry and pulled weeds at Flanner House, which operates a two-acre community farm.
STARR is open to all students and meets every Friday.
