UPLAND, Ind. — Marian University baseball was swept by No. 11 Taylor University in a doubleheader on Thursday, April 24, falling 11-1 in the opener and 10-0 in the second game.
In Game 1, the Knights managed just five hits over seven innings and struggled to gain momentum against the Trojans’ dominant pitching. Taylor opened with a run in the first inning and added three more in the second off Marian starter Davis Enfield, highlighted by a home run and a string of timely hits.
Enfield settled in during the third and fourth innings, holding Taylor scoreless, but ultimately took the loss, dropping to 7-4 on the season. He allowed five runs on six hits over 4.1 innings. Relievers Justin Johnson and Chris Adams closed out the game, but Taylor extended its lead with a four-run sixth inning.
Marian’s lone run came in the sixth inning when Nathan Pilarski singled, stole a base, and scored on a wild pitch. Hector Corona added a double in the seventh, but the Knights couldn’t convert, and the game ended via the run rule. Taylor’s Gabel Pentecost earned the win, improving to 11-1.
Game 2 followed a similar pattern, with Taylor scoring early. Logan Drook gave up a two-run home run in the first inning and another solo shot in the fourth before exiting. He allowed four earned runs over three innings, bringing his record to 1-5.
Though Marian tallied six hits—including doubles by Elijah Kelly and Max Steffen—the Knights were unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities. Taylor broke the game open in the fifth, scoring five runs off reliever Mitchell Porter to take a 10-0 lead. Carter King pitched a scoreless sixth inning in relief.
Salazar and Steffen led the Knights with two hits apiece, but the team left multiple runners stranded, including a bases-loaded situation in the seventh inning.
Despite the losses, the team is focused on growth. “We’re building every day and learning from every experience,” sophomore catcher Jacob Dill said. “It’s about staying focused, trusting each other, and continuing to compete.”
