Marian University kicked off the fall semester with a flurry of events designed to strengthen community and welcome students back to campus. From ice cream socials to concerts, student leaders say participation is high and the campus culture is thriving.
The week began on Wednesday, Sept. 3, with the Union for

Black Identity’s annual Ice Cream Social. Students gathered for games, line dancing, and—of course—ice cream. On Thursday, Sept. 4, the Unity Center opened its doors with its annual Open House, spotlighting multicultural engagement and available campus resources. The celebrations wrapped up Friday, Sept. 5, with the Campus Activities Board’s concert featuring country artist Hank Ruff at the Marian University Amphitheater.
Students say the turnout at these events shows a growing sense of connection. “I feel like this year so many students aren’t afraid to get involved anymore,” junior Jada Amacker said. “The community here on campus has been growing, and it shows. So many people showed up and showed out for our ice cream social. It was great.”
Campus leaders echoed that enthusiasm. Student Body President Peter Waning said building community is central to SGA’s goals this year. “We want to make sure everyone’s voices are heard,” Waning said. “As president, it’s my job to ensure all voices are heard, and that starts with showing our face. The push for more community and togetherness on campus has been showing. I’m looking forward to what we have to offer.”

Angelica Smith, director of the Unity Center, tied the momentum to a larger focus on mission-driven leadership. “With the new push for creating and upholding the mission and values for each organization, it truly makes sure both staff and student leadership understand who they’re serving, why they’re doing it, and how to continue to grow,” Smith said. “At the Unity Center, we hope to grow as both a home and resource for our students.”
Organizations such as Student Activities and SGA are also working to unify clubs and student organizations for the 2025–26 school year. Leaders say these coordinated efforts align with Marian’s mission of belonging, leadership, and engagement.
As the semester continues, both freshmen and returning students are stepping into campus life. With collaboration among leaders and enthusiastic student participation, Marian’s community spirit is showing new signs of strength, unity, and growth.
