San Damiano Scholars gathered Tuesday, Nov. 18, for a Friendsgiving celebration at “The Rock,” a white house near the Michael A. Evans Center for Health Sciences that serves as a hub for the San Damiano Scholars Program and the Missionary Disciples Institute.
The event brought together scholars from freshman through senior year, including students who work in campus ministry positions at Marian University. The evening focused on gratitude, fellowship and sharing a meal as students reflected on their experiences within the San Damiano program.
“One of the best things people can do together is share a meal, which is why this event is so good,” senior Aaron Bauman said. “I am thankful for the San Damiano program, which gave me friends for all four years here.”
Often referred to as “San Dams,” students contributed side dishes and desserts in a potluck-style meal, while the program’s directors provided the turkey. The gathering continued a tradition of well-attended community events for the scholars, following earlier celebrations such as a Halloween costume contest earlier in the semester.
Father Rick Martignetti, vice president of mission and ministry, spoke about the connection between Thanksgiving and faith, emphasizing gratitude as a spiritual practice.
“I always heard that gratitude prayers are like throwing a boomerang,” Martignetti said. “It comes back to you in so many wonderful ways. When we say thank you, our eyes are opened, and we see so many more beautiful things God has given us.”
Senior Reva Tincher said the Friendsgiving celebration remains a highlight of the year for many scholars.
“This is the second one that I have gone to, and it’s wonderful to be part of this community,” Tincher said. “This event allows us to come together and share in the joy of everyone around us.”
The evening concluded with food, conversation and reflection, giving students an opportunity to pause and express gratitude for their relationships and the San Damiano Scholars community.
