The Lunar New Year event hosted by the Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association (APAMSA), was set up in the Evans Center atrium on Feb. 15 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. APAMSA members set up tables in the atrium in order to provide passing students and staff with the opportunity to make and decorate lanterns and choose a festive red envelope with a treat inside to take home. Traditionally, people decorate their lanterns with well wishes and goals for the upcoming year.
“Lunar New Year is a big holiday in Asian culture just like New Year is for Western culture. We wanted to do something fun to bring attention to this holiday,” said Rachel Martin, sophomore medical student and member of APAMSA.
This year’s Lunar New Year was on Feb. 10 but APAMSA couldn’t celebrate until Feb. 15 due to preparing for exams. This holiday is so huge that even with their busy schedule, they make time to celebrate and bring people together at Marian University.
